Concert Venues

Anghiari was at the centre of rivalries between The Florentine republic, the Venetian Republic, the Papal Sates and the Milanese. The key Battle of Anghiari in 1440 was commemorated in a Leonardo fresco and both the battle and the artistic event are explained in the Museo di Palazzo Taglieschi. This building is the backdrop for several of the concerts held in Piazza Mameli.

Also in the old town is Piazza del Popolo, the Town hall providing the scenery and an ampitheatre for larger opera, choral and orchestral performances.

The festival visits three churches in town. Chiesa della Propositura, which was constructed in the sevententh century and has been recently restored, is the venue for the Mass sung by Vox Musica. Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, which dates from the twelfth century and forms part of the town ramparts, will be used for a choral concert. Chiesa di Santo Stefano, dating from the seventh century, is the venue for a Chamber Recital.

Just outside town, Pieve di Santa Maria alla Sovara , a parish church dating form the eleventh century, is the venue for a concert of English music for voices and strings.

Further outside Anghiari, the Festival visits Cenacolo di Montauto, a Francescan monastry dating from the Renaissance; Chiostro del Carmine, a 14th century Carmelite monastry to the west (the concert takes place in the cloisters); and Castello di Sorci, a short distance outside town (with a local restaurant in the grounds humming at lunchtime).
